Jose Ramirez No. 6906
1973 José Ramírez III 1a No. 6909 (Spain), 664 mm scale, 53 mm nut, cedar top, Brazilian rosewood sides and back, original catalyzed urethane varnish, gold engraved Fustero tuning machines. One of the last 1a’s of this era made with Brazilian rosewood, by this date the Ramírez shop was mostly using Indian rosewood. Ramírez popularized many of the features which are now standard with the Madrid based luthiers, such as catalyzed urethane varnishes, laminated sides (using cypress or maple) higher actions to satisfy the demands of Segovia who wanted no buzzing no matter how high the strings had to be, and internal bracing designed to make the guitar incredibly brilliant and operatic. These 1a’s have become iconic in their influence to other makers’ thinking and in their widespread representation among the top players in the world. This instrument is THE classic 1a with the notable exception that this action is playable, unlike many which are beyond the left hand of mere mortal guitarists. On the bass side it measures 4.25 mm and on the treble 3 mm at the 12th fret making this example a rare outlier in the Ramírez corpus of output. You can PLAY this guitar, it responds and you will not be fatigued after an hour. It has the classic Ramírez trebles so elusive to achieve which are sought but rarely emulated other makers, and those deep rich basses, balanced perfectly with an unheard of “normal” action. No need to spend 2 grand having a new fingerboard fitted, this one was perfect from day one, and the condition is near mint. $7500
