I began making guitars in 1966 in Dayton Ohio, where I worked out of my house. From 1968-1970 I lived in Mexico City, returning during the summers to build instruments at the Dayton location.

During this time I was studying Anthropology and playing flamenco guitar professionally in various troupes in Mexico and around the U.S. In 1972 I moved to Chicago and worked briefly out of the back of a music store before moving to my present location in 1973.

At that point I gave up any pretensions of being a professional guitarist and dedicated myself full time to lutherie.

My 800 Greenwood Street shop has undergone several renovations and changes over the years, the most recent being the 1995 massive renovation I did of the outside and inside of the building.

As a result, my building is now climate controlled throughout the entire 4,000 square feet, and it has now acquired a nicer facade, with more interior showroom space than was previously available.

Consequently, we are better able to serve those who prefer to visit the shop to select an instrument from our extensive inventory, which is housed in glass fronted rosewood cabinets. Being able to play many instruments side by side is very helpful in making a final selection, and we have full repair/restoration facilities on the premises for minor action adjustments to major restorations of valuable collector instruments.

R. E. Brune No. 678

2004 R. E. Brune No. 687, (USA), Custom Concert Model, 640mm Scale, 50 mm nut, Spruce Top, Paduk (Vermillion) Sides and Back, French Polish finish, Rodgers Hauser style tuning machines. This is a custom made guitar using a slightly smaller Santos Hernandez style body. Traditional guitar building in Spain would not use a standard size body, but would build a custom sized body to fit the player. The body size is no indication of the sound, in fact, the sound of this guitar is absolutely huge, equal or larger than many full bodied instruments. The usable dynamic range is quite large, making the instrument a very sensitive and highly musical instrument. Bright and even trebles, colorful and responsive basses with near perfect balance will give the player a very wide palate of sound reminiscent of the Santos or Torres tradition. The sides and back were selected to be proportional in mass to the size reduction of the body, hence the selection of Paduk (which in Spain is called “Coral”) instead of the much heavier Rosewood. Everything on this instrument is proportional to the 640 mm scale to ensure that all musical qualities are maximized. The plate on the soundboard has been installed since new, to protect from errant nail marks and excessive wear. Likewise, there there is a second small protector just behind the bridge to protect from string damage. The original French polish has some visible wear fading due to many years of playing, but there are no cracks. $10,000
