Yamaha GC-30
1982 Yamaha GC 30-A No.781 (Japan), 662 mm scale, 52 mm nut, spruce top, Brazilian rosewood sides and back, original catalyzed urethane varnish, deluxe Gotoh tuning machines. Don’t let the name put you off. In Japan the name Yamaha is associated with the highest quality products, and this instrument was handmade in their Japan custom shop by a small team of dedicated luthiers working with the finest select solid materials. In the late 1960’s the Yamaha company paid Manolo Hernandez (of the legendary Madrid team of Aguado y Hernandez) to travel to Japan and show his skills to the makers working in the Yamaha custom shop making their top end instruments, which he did. This instrument reflects very clearly that association with the internal bracing clearly inspired by that used in Aguado y Hernandez guitars. Unlike the originals however, the Yamaha guitars used the correct math and bridge placement compensations, so they actually play in tune. In keeping with Japanese preferences these were sprayed and polished to a high gloss rather than organically French polished which was too “rustic” for Japanese buyers. Many famous players have used these as their concert touring instruments including Leo Brouwer who has toured with a similar model Yamaha for many decades. The sound is brilliant and piano-like, warm and balanced, with an easy action. There is minor nail wear visible on the top by the 1st string, so the price is set very reasonably, less than the cost of a raw set of Brazilian rosewood. $2500.
